The Pratt Institute Alumni Achievement Award 2018

Oct 23, 2018

I hope you had an amazing week. I have more great news to share. Most of you know that I received my Masters of Science in Advanced Architectural design from Columbia University and Bachelors of Architecture from Pratt Institute. I credit Columbia as the place that taught how to be an advocate and Pratt as being the place where I learned how to be an architect.

I am so very humbled to share that last month they honored five astonishingly brilliant and talented alumnae and myself.

  • Tucker Viemeister, BID ’74 (School of Design)

  • Thomas J. Hughes, BME ’65; MME ’67 (School of Engineering)

  • Derrick Adams, BFA Art and Design Education ’96 (School of Art)

  • Mahogany L. Browne, MFA Writing ’16 (School of Liberal Arts and Sciences)

  • Margot Williams, MSLIS ’80 (School of Information)

Best part of the award reception sharing the moment with my family and meeting and the other award winners.

Derrick Adams, BFA Art and Design Education ’96 (School of Art) During the dinner reception, my young son walks right up to Derrick and opened in arms, requesting to be picked up. Derrick picked him up and X preceded to lay his head on Derricks shoulder and gives him a long hug. As amazed and astonished as my husband and I, Derrick says "this is better than the award itself." While this bonding was taking place, Matt and I was able to get to know Derrick. We all had a chuckle as X pulled on his distinctive beard. Needless to say Derrick is officially apart of the family.

Family Photo booth Fun

He has exhibited and/or performed at MoMA PS1, Brooklyn Museum of Art, PERFORMA, Studio Museum in Harlem, Brooklyn Academy of Music, California African American Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Museum of Arts and Design, among other notable galleries and institutions. Adams’s work is in the permanent collections of Studio Museum in Harlem, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Birmingham Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Fun Fact: In Empire Season 5 episode 01- Derrick's artwork is shown and he is mentioned by name in the first 5 minutes.

My family's support is everything!

Tucker Viemeister, BID ’74 (School of Design) During the presidents reception, Tucker and I discovered our mutual respect and adoration we have for my mentor Anita Cooney Dean of the School of Design.

Called the “most industrious designer,” Tucker Viemeister thrives on collaboration and working in all scales of 3D and 2D in exhibitions, architecture, graphics, new media, branding, and strategy. He is most famous for OXO Good Grips kitchen tools that conceived “universal design” designed at Smart Design, the company he helped found in 1979. He also founded the Lab at Rockwell Group, was EVP of Razorfish, and Director of Special Projects with Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Thinc, and he is now designing the Shanghai planetarium with Xenerio. He is Vice President of the Architectural League and a Fellow of the Industrial Design Society of America.

Giving my acceptance speech

"Thank you to my family who are my most ardent advocates; who were brave to support me pursue this non-conventional career path; who answered the phone at 4am when I was doubting my talent and my ability to glue basswood together; who even came to my final thesis review to see me in action."

Please know your support means everything to me. You are a part of my community and someone I aspire to make proud.
